Project Overview
Fox Structures has partnered with Plum Creek Dairy on multiple projects at its Waupun-based operation, including a recent three-structure build completed during the pandemic. So when owner Abe Lemmenes purchased an additional dairy farm in Fox Lake, Fox Structures was the clear choice to handle the facility upgrades.
One of the primary needs was improving airflow in a freestall barn that was more than 10 years old. The existing ventilation system was no longer providing adequate air movement, impacting cow comfort and overall performance.
Fox Structures designed and installed a new tunnel ventilation system, converting the existing barn into a tunnel-ventilated facility. Retrofitting a ventilation system into an existing structure presents unique challenges, but Fox Structures collaborated closely with ventilation experts at Munters to deliver an effective solution.
Following Munters’ design, ridge fans were installed at the peak of the building to control winter conditions by removing excess moisture and preventing freezing. During warmer months, the tunnel ventilation system draws air through the barn at speeds of five to seven miles per hour, creating consistent airflow and a more comfortable environment for the cows.
The results are a win-win. Healthier, more comfortable cows are more productive, making the investment in improved ventilation well worth it.
In addition to the ventilation upgrades, Fox Structures completed roofing replacements and other facility repairs. The project began in March and was completed by the end of May—just in time for Plum Creek Dairy to host a June 1 dairy breakfast on the farm.
